Impact is the New Black

Have you noticed?
“Impact” is everywhere and is often strung together in catchphrases like “Increase your Impact” or “Amplify your Impact”.
“Impact” is so hot right now and that’s because if you’re in the coaching/transformation/personal development space you have a message and purpose to share with the world and the idea of increasing your impact means that your message gets broadcast through the interwebs, and will reach bajillions of people.
Right? Riiiight…
So, business coaches who teach marketing and sales will tell you that they can teach you how to Increase Your Impact by reaching a bigger audience, which will convert to more sales and more clients, and as a result, your message reaches more people.
Why Impact?
It pulls on our heartstrings. Let’s face it, we’re in a social crisis worldwide. We recognize that many of our systems are unjust, that many people are struggling or even suffering in a world where others have so much, and most of us want to do something about it.
The narrative that if we get more clients, and make more money we can help more people, is extremely appealing. And… it’s also a really narrow understanding of impact.
Impact is about outcomes. Impact describes both the moment that one thing comes into contact with another (e.g. the moment of impact in a car accident) and the degree to which the moment of impact has a lasting effect.
The total impact of your work (and the potential for your work) can be measured much more dynamically than the size of your audience or your sales conversions. Your impact can be measured by the actual effect you have in someone’s life, the different degrees of growth people experience, the impact you have on creating equity for people with marginalized identities, the impact you have on your team, your colleagues, and the world around you. The way you communicate your values and how that influences others to take a stand in their professional and personal lives.
Your actual impact is dynamic and can be beautiful, restorative, transformative, and life-changing in ways that you can’t even imagine. I want to invite you into the awareness of your full potential impact.

Over the next few months, I’ll be writing more about the different the dimensions of impact, how we live and work and the impact it has on us, on others, and on our world. I really hope you join me on this journey and I’d love to know if you have any questions or ideas for areas you’d like me to explore.
